Is masturbation a sin?

That’s a dozy for you today and it has the capacity to make you uncomfortable at first glance, doesn’t it?!

By way of FaithVillage.com, I found a blog belonging to Pastor Dave Dunham of Southern Ohio. He makes an interesting argument about masturbation and its capacity to be a gateway to other sin.

Take a moment to read his post about this subject and share your thoughts.

I responded on the post, but since your blog led me to that post, I thought I would share my thoughts on the topic. Here are 5 questions that sum it up for me. If my answer is no to any of these five questions – for me it is sin.

    Can you masturbate without lusting?
Can you masturbate in a way that builds oneness with your spouse?
Can you masturbate without experiencing shame?
Can you masturbate with a clear conscience?
Can you masturbate without giving in to the cravings of your sinful desires and thoughts?

Thank you for sharing your thoughts, whittmadden! Within the context of a marriage, I wonder if we can still consider this as great of a concern, as a couple’s passion for one another isn’t considered to be lust?

I think if it is in regards to anyone outside of the marriage, then it is something to be considered. If it is something that is done in secret. Hope that makes sense.

My husband walked out on our family 13 years ago and has since remarried and started a new family. I have no interest in starting over with someone new and strongly feel I am more of an inspiration as a single mother displaying God’s work in my life. From the blog post, it seems that Pastor Dunham is saying that single people are sinning if they stimulate themselves. I can see where it might be an issue pre-marriage, but what about post-marriage? Especially when one can answer yes to all the questions that don’t include that now-ex-spouse?

Good point! I understand the morality questions, but let’s take it from the basis of preserving one’s health. It has been noted over recent years that masturbation, with the goal of orgasm, helps keep the body healthy.

      Thanks for your comment!
